HomeKit Weekly: SwitchBot Candle Warmer Lamp brings safe scents to Apple Home

作者 Bradley C
2026年1月31日 03:25

I love the smell of candles, but I hate the anxiety that comes with an open flame. There have been multiple times I’ve had to turn around after leaving to double-check that I’ve blown out a candle. That is why the SwitchBot Candle Warmer Lamp caught my eye. It promises all the ambiance and smells of a candle with zero risk of burning the house down. Best of all, it supports Matter right out of the box, making it a native citizen in your HomeKit/Apple Home environment.

MagSafe Monday: Hands-on with the Defencase MagSafe wallet

作者 Bradley C
2026年1月27日 03:08

Since Apple first introduced MagSafe, the accessory market has flooded with wallets that typically follow a very specific form factor. Most are sleeves designed to hold two or three cards at most. They rarely resemble the classic wallets many people have carried for decades. The Defencase MagSafe wallet attempts to bridge this gap by offering a design that leans closer to a traditional aesthetic.

If you were managing Macs in the enterprise fifteen years ago, you weren’t just an IT admin who loved Apple, you were a survivalist. In those days, Apple was often an afterthought in the corporate world, treated as a nuisance by many IT leaders who prioritized Windows and PC deployments. Because we didn’t have massive vendor support or enterprise-grade tools handed to us, the Mac admin community had to build them ourselves. The community wrote scripts, shared knowledge, and built apps. Obviously, today is different. Apple is quickly becoming the default endpoint for enterprises. The community effort hasn’t stopped, though. Another app showed up on my radar recently, and it’s a prime example of the Mac admins community at work. Let’s look at M.A.C.E.

HomeKit Weekly: Shelly Flood Gen4 brings cable water leak detection to Apple Home via Matter

作者 Bradley C
2026年1月24日 03:38

Nothing in my life brings more stress than worrying about water leaks. Especially during the coldest part of winter, thinking about freezing pipes bursting, etc, it somewhat keeps me up at night. I have written before about how much I rely on water leak sensors to ensure I don’t have leaks that I’m unaware of.

While “puck” style sensors are awesome for slipping under a sink, they have a fatal flaw: water has to touch that specific 1-inch spot to trigger an alert. If the leak starts six inches to the left, you might not know until your floorboards are already warping. This week, I am taking a look at the new Shelly Flood Gen4 sensor.

MagSafe Monday: Anker’s slim Qi2 battery is the perfect addition to your EDC kit

作者 Bradley C
2026年1月20日 03:19

I recently pulled the trigger on a new iPhone 17 Pro and upgraded from my iPhone 15 Pro. I spent a lot of time debating between the Pro Max and the smaller screen for extra battery life, but I ultimately decided to stick with the smaller screen for portability.

Personally, I’d love to buy an iPhone 17 mini, but nevertheless. The Max is just too big for my front pocket, and I prefer being able to use the phone with one hand. However, sticking with the smaller battery forced me to rethink my EDC kit. Since I wasn’t going to have the massive cell of the Pro Max, I needed a reliable way to top up during heavy usage days without carrying a massive MagSafe battery in my pocket. I wanted a battery that was slim enough to disappear until I needed it. That search led me to the Anker Nano Power Bank, and I used it heavily at Universal Studios this past weekend.

HomeKit Weekly: Why water leak sensors are still the most critical smart home upgrade for 2026

作者 Bradley C
2026年1月18日 03:30

Water leaks and water damage are one of my biggest fears as a homeowner. With hardwood floors throughout my house, even a small water leak could turn into a massive repair bill and a huge inconvenience to get them repaired. A slow drip from a sink can quickly cause thousands of dollars (or tens of thousands) in damage to your floors and cabinets. If I had to choose one smart home category that actually gives me peace of mind, it would be the ones that prevent disasters. In 2026, the water leak sensor is still the most critical piece of hardware in my HomeKit setup.

Apple @ Work: Password Utility solves the FileVault reboot headache for remote Macs

If you have managed Macs with remote work for any length of time, you know the specific sense of issue that comes with having to restart. You have a long wait for the screen-sharing part to come back online. The problem isn’t the network. The problem boils down to FileVault. When a modern Mac reboots, it shows a pre-boot macOS login screen that is not yet fully connected to the network or has not yet loaded the full OS. It is encrypted, secure, and completely unreachable until someone physically types a password. For IT folks managing a fleet of devices in various locations, this is a nightmare. Twocanoes Software has a tool called Password Utility that finally fixes this annoyance, and for $10 a year, it belongs on every Apple Silicon Mac you manage remotely. I found this tool because I recently had this issue with a Mac I manage so I went searching for a solution.

The appeal of MagSafe is undeniable in the car. The magnetic snap that perfectly aligns the charging coils ensures you are getting the most efficient power transfer possible while also never worrying about a cable. Frankly, once you use MagSafe in the car, there is no going back. Even prior to MagSafe, people loved mounts, but they also needed to charge as well. MagSafe mounts combine both! Today, I am taking a look at the ESR OmniLock with Qi2.2.

Apple @ Work: It’s time for an Apple Knowledge Base Articles API to save us from bad AI troubleshooting

For an IT Director in 2026, you are probably overwhelmed with AI tools and strategies that promise to answer every question, so you never have to read a support document again. The problem can often be with data sources. If I ask a third-party LLM why a specific configuration profile setting is failing to work as you want on macOS, they are likely to guess based on data scraped from Reddit threads or other random places. We don’t need more AI chatbots guessing at Apple IT solutions. I believe the next major feature for Apple Business/School Manager should be an IT Knowledge API that allows device management service vendors to bake Apple’s official, real-time troubleshooting data directly into their products.

HomeKit Weekly: Flic brings physical button control to your Matter environment

作者 Bradley C

I love the idea of a fully automated smart home setup where my lights turn on exactly when I need them, and the thermostat adjusts itself without me even thinking about it. In practice, however, there are times when you simply want to push a button for things to happen. For guests, babysitters, or when I don’t want to use my iPhone, physical controls remain the gold standard for interaction.

This week, let’s take a look at the Flic Hub LR and the new Flic Duo as a nice way to control your Apple Home scenes and devices.

LISEN has been one of my favorite recent brands that I’ve been watching. The company’s new 3-in-1 charger is a really nice addition to its lineup. One of the things I love most about it is the foldable design, which is somewhat unique for most MagSafe charging setups. It can charge your iPhone, AirPods, and Apple Watch, and also includes Qi2 support. I have a new office setup, this is the one I am using next to my laptop.

We are just past the five-year anniversary of the first Apple Silicon Mac (M1 MacBook Air), and the long-term impact of that transition is starting to show up for both Apple and IT teams. MacPaw’s new Mac Admin Survey for 2026 paints a clear picture of what life looks like for IT teams managing Apple hardware. Macs are lasting longer, IT teams are relying more on automation and maintenance tools, and AI is quietly becoming part of everyday IT team workflows. At the same time, resource gaps are growing, and most teams are understaffed. IT teams are being asked to support larger fleets with fewer people, and they are turning to community support and new tools to keep up with ticket volume, etc.

Dashlane’s new Passkey Power Report makes something very clear for consumers and businesses alike. Passkeys are no longer a future project for IT departments. They are becoming part of daily life for end-users, and the adoption curve will rapidly accelerate from here. According to the report, 40% of Dashlane customers now store at least one passkey, which is double what the report showed last year. One likely huge reason for this growth is that Google made passkeys the default for personal Google accounts, pushing its own usage up more than 350%. Even SaaS apps like HubSpot and Okta are experiencing rapid growth as they roll out support.
